How to get your Indesign document into MS word

I know most design geeks first response will be "why would you want to do that?" Normally I'd agree, word is horrible for page layout and any publishable document deserves to be well formatted and laid out -- not to mention keep the fonts you originally used.

Well guess what? Headhunters and recruiters don't like PDF resumes even if we love them. It makes it harder for them to cut-copy-paste into their databases (or edit them, grrrr). So to appease the employment doorkeepers, I've bit the bullet.

Now you can't export to a .doc format from InDesign, so after some searching I found the trick that works, and then lost the page. I'm not taking credit for this, just helping spread the word.

If you've got InDesign, hopefully you also have Acrobat Professional. I've tested this in version 7 and it works pretty well.

1. Save your .indd file as a PDF.
2. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro.
3. Go to File>Save As
4. Select Microsoft Word Document
5. Enjoy fixing your new .doc file!
